A Body Shape Index (ABSI) Calculator

Estimate ABSI, ABSI z-score (Table S1 method), and BMI from waist, height, weight, age, and sex.

How are ABSI and ABSI z-score calculated?

ABSI = WC ÷ (BMI2/3 × Height1/2)
where waist (WC) and height are in meters, BMI in kg/m².

ABSI z-score compares your ABSI to people of the same age and sex using the NHANES 1999–2004 smoothed single-year means and standard deviations (Table S1, Krakauer & Krakauer 2012). We linearly interpolate between ages for fractional ages.

For illustration purposes only. Not medical advice.

Interpreting ABSI z-score (broad guidance)

  • < −0.5: Lower risk (below-average central shape)
  • −0.5 to +0.5: Average risk
  • +0.5 to +1.5: Elevated risk
  • > +1.5: High risk

ABSI has been linked to mortality risk independently of BMI; z-scores use age/sex norms.
